Interview: Jon Huertas Talks Sex And The Explosive 'Castle'
Fans of ABC's Castle may already know that actor Jon Huertas is a real life U.S. veteran just like his character Detective Javier Esposito. But did you know that he's also an aspiring singer with a taste for whipped cream, particularly when served on a lady's thighs? We went over all that plus Huertas' reaction to the incredible season four finale of Castle that you should totally not read if haven't already seen it. It's really that good.
---------
Ology: I have to ask you about the season finale in Castle –– that was pretty amazing. What was your reaction to the episode?
Jon Huertas: I think it was probably the best episode we've done so far in Castle, with the mix of so much drama, so many things going on, and so many revelations. It's really hard to do that in one episode and I think our writers did that really well. Our director Robert Bowman, who I always love working with, really kept the story flowing and kept it moving fast and all into great cinematic television. It was a team effort and it was probably one of the best pieces of work that we have all done together as cast and crew.
**Season Finale Spoiler**
I definitely agree. I listed it as one of the top 25 episodes of the year. What was your reaction when you read the script. Did you believe what you were seeing?
Yeah, when I read the script it jumped off the page and I could tell it was going to be a great episode. You know of course when you see the death of Captain Montgomery that’s not easy to swallow. Not only is [actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson] a great actor and everybody loves him, but it was a honor to work with him on a daily basis and it’s sad I didn’t know that part of it but that usually makes for a great part of the episode and a great part of the series to solve another part of Beckett’s mother’s murder.
So what do you think of the story and what it will be like on the set without having Ruben and the character Captain Montgomery being around?
I think it’s going to feel a little weird. We also have to welcome a new boss to the set and it will be weird, I think. Anytime when you have a couple of parents break up and someone gets a new girlfriend and the family has to bond, then you get used to that person after a while, but I’m sure they will hire an amazing actor. Who wouldn’t fit, right? I’m sure we’ll get along swimmingly.
Who would you like to see come in and take that role?
Well, I have been thinking about that for a while now actually I just don’t know who plays an actor or actress that I’d like to work with so I don’t know, I mean Camryn Manheim did come to mind. I think that she’s a great actress, very nice lady and super sweet women. I think she’s great and she’s equally good with comedy and I think she’d be great for the show. She’d be a great addition.
Cool, are you going to do a petition at all for that?
Nah I’m going to let them guys do what they do. That’s not really part of my job description so I’m going to leave that alone.
**End of Season Finale Spoiler**
Now this is going to be the 4th season. How do you see your character, Detective Esposito, changing and maybe what kind of changes do you expect next season?
Well, you got the personal relationship he has with Seamus [Det. Kevin Ryan] and Beckett and a lot of drama that has transpired in her life the last couple of years and being a part of that as a dear friend, like a family member actually. I think we’ve seen Esposito get a little older and a little deeper in ways and I think this season you’ll see the character get a little more in depth from what I’m hearing, which I’m excited about.
Your character also has that relationship with Lanie. How do you see that progressing?
That’s still going, I’m not sure where we’re going to take it this season. I did sit down with the writers and talk about just how the character is and things they would like to see but you know those things aren’t on paper yet so I’m not going to comment on them. I got this alter ego, you guys know "Spoiler Man"? Yea I’m a super hero, man. If I did know I wouldn’t tell you.
Yeah I have seen that. [Laughs] But I felt that it was worth a shot
Yeah, but it’s part of the movie magic in my mind. In my mind, growing up loving and watching TV and film and being a part of it and even theater, I don’t really like to see anything. I like the story to be a surprise.
Cool. Yeah, I agree. So I heard a rumor and maybe you can confirm this… that Sex is The Word?
Sex is the word. [laughs] I did this film called “Sex is The Word” kind of inspired by the Grease musical, Grease is The Word. Some of it was inspired to validate how we like this thing that we shouldn’t be talking about. Even on YouTube I can’t type the title “Sex is the word” I have to type “S… is the word.” I think people know we have sex but telling people that we have sex… So I just want to tell people how I feel about it and how I feel about sex issues. It’s one of those things that gives us such a pleasurable experience without outside stimulation. All we need is two human bodies, hell we only need one human body really.
Maybe you watch a movie for pleasure but you need a movie; listen to music to get pleasure but you need music; eat chocolate for pleasure but you need chocolate; ride a rollercoaster –– all these things require outside stimulation in order to get this pleasure. I think it should be more celebrated that we only need our bodies and not be talked about behind closed doors.
Yeah, I see where you’re coming from. Was this all your idea from beginning to end or were other people involved in the creation?
Well, initially there were a couple of versions of it over the years. This was one where I was with a friend who heard me sing and he had friends in the music business. I met up with these guys… and met this amazing songwriter named Beach Boy and literally within two and half hours we had written and recorded this song and it was just so fast and flowed so easy. If people like the song enough where they don’t tell me to shut up I’m going to do this some more.
I saw the video and I thought it was great. Was the whipped cream your idea?
Yeah, it was another thing about sex. If I took the song and video too seriously, I think it would have been corny and I’m a fan of, me and Nathan [Fillion] talk about this all the time, but if you have a hero or something, I think that the hero should always get kicked in the nuts a little bit –– that’s a humanized hero. So if you take this sexy type matter –– and the video is sexually visual –– if you take it too seriously it always comes off corny. I want to make fun of it a little bit and make fun of myself and do a little tongue in cheek in the video, hopefully make people laugh a little bit. Just so people know like “look man, not only is sex sexy, but it’s fun and funny sometimes.” We can have fun and be funny with everything in life.
Yeah, it looks like it must have been a lot of fun on that set.
Oh yeah, it was a lot of fun to be on that set. Trust me.
One of the things we do here at Ology is we connect fans with the things they are passionate about. What are some of the things you are passionate about that you can’t live without?
I love Venice, California. I couldn’t live anywhere else. This is just an amazing community and part of the world. Something that I can’t live without? I can’t live without a dog in my life, a companion. Its unconditional love is different from people so I can’t live without a dog or a pet, but a dog is definitely my pet of choice.
Any particular dog?
Well I have an African Barthalmus dog. For over 20 years I’ve had dogs. One of my dogs is 18 right now and I had a couple before her. I’ve had a fetish pretty much my entire adult life. I don’t think I’ll always have Barthalmuses, but my dog still doing pretty well and I’m thinking about another dog.
What else can’t I live without? I can’t live without music, I love music too much…I can’t live without my job, being an actor. I mean I could live but I would die. I would kill myself. It would be really hard not being able to do what I do.
If you weren’t acting what do you think you would do?
Most likely I would still be in the military or a cop.
Really?
I kind of have a little bit of a hero complex. I have to be helping people do well in some way. I would definitely be doing something like that where I could help and take care of people.
Well that’s awesome. Last question: Is there any chance we will see Detective Esposito break out in song next season?
[Laughs] There’s always a possibility there might be some sort of murder maybe in the professional karaoke circuit, and I get to help. [Laughs] I don't know, I mean I’m just throwing something out there [laughs].
Well I hope that comes true. Thanks for talking with me today.
Of course, man. Nice talking to you.
